The Iphone 15 Pro Max is apples latest and greatest smartphone. It has some amazing hardware capable of shooting pro-res video and some great photos as well. A durable design with titanium body and Apples best in the business software support. But how does this one fair for your eyes? Let's find out.
At 75% we can see the things are not looking too good. This year apple did boost the frequency of its flicker rate up to 492. We see the exact same flicker rate on the newest Samsung Galaxy 24 Ultra as well, which makes sense since Apple used Samsung as their supplier for screens on this years iPhone. However a flicker rate paired with a high modulation depth of 91% adds up to horrible for the eyes.
As we move to 50% brightness we can see no improvement. The flicker rate remains at a constant 492 hertz and the modulation depth increases even higher at 98%. If you look at the modulation in the picture on the right you can see that it looks like Apple is trying to decrease the modulation in every other wave. You can see it dips close to zero but not quite. I think this is a good step in the right direction, but it's still not enough to prevent eye strain for sensitive people.
At 25% brightness we see the flicker rate remains the same at 492 herts and the modulation lets go of any attempt to reduce itself and instead of every other wave hitting zero (completely off) we see all the waves hitting zero. The modulation at this point is at 99.5%, which you might as well just pour bleach in your eyes. To summarize the iPhone 15 pro max is a no go for anyone sensitive to flickering and modulation.
